Barneys to return to its Chelsea location in February

Barneys New York announced in December 2013 that it will be returning to its historic downtown Manhattan location in Chelsea in 2017, but the American media is reporting that the luxury retailer is planning to open its downtown store as early as mid-February 2016.

The Chelsea location is a four-story, 58,000-square-foot location that will carry men’s and women’s designer clothing, shoes and accessories, as well as cosmetics, fragrances and skincare. The Steven Harris-designed interior will resemble the retailer’s Madison Avenue location with a modern, open, gallery feel. Major highlights of the new store include a stainless steel canopy that hearkens to the historic store’s original design, a spiral staircase, a window display featuring portraits of Cyndi Lauper, father-and-son actors Bobby and Jake Cannavale, God’s Love We Deliver founder Ganga Stone, New York City Fire Department’s first female battalion chief Rocky Jones and others.

The store will launch with exclusive capsule collections from designers and brands such as Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler for women and Vêtements and Y-3 for men. In addition, an outpost for full-service men’s salon, Blind Barber, will be in the basement level beauty shop.

Barney Pressman originally opened Barneys New York on Seventh Avenue in Chelsea in 1923. The retailer first launched as a discount retailer, but by the 1970s it evolved into a luxury menswear destination and by 1976 became a location for women’s clothing, cosmetics, homeware and gifts. The Chelsea store was shut down in 1997 just four years after the Madison Avenue flagship location opened. The Barneys Warehouse sale would be held in the Chelsea neighborhood as a homage to the retailer’s early days, but that has been moved to online only after the 2013 Warehouse sale which was its last.

The Barneys downtown Manhattan store will be located at Seventh Avenue between 16th Street and 17th Street.
